WellMed Medical Group, a Texas physician-owned medical practice management company, improved knee-replacement patient recovery time and reduced costs by using the Care Guidelines. With increased patient education, and aggressive pre- and post-surgery physical therapy, WellMed sent most patients home four days after surgery. By eliminating the usual 10 to 20 post-discharge days in a Skilled Nursing Facility, WellMed saved $2.1 million in one year. The faster return to home and to normal daily activities also increased WellMed patient satisfaction to 96.3 percent, up from 90 percent or less with the longer SNF program.

Missouri-based Cox HealthPlans was searching for a way to ensure consistent, high-quality care to its members while keeping the cost contained. The company instituted the Milliman Care Guidelines® to help determine the best medical practices and set the most effective standards of care. In the first year, Cox HealthPlans saved $159,000 by recognizing the appropriate level of care in inpatient and recovery care. Cox later added the Behavioral Health Guidelines and realized a savings of nearly $200,000 in payments for medically unnecessary levels of care in just the first few months.
