This course provides an opportunity for medical directors, physician reviewers, and patient-care physicians to examine the role of evidence-based guidelines in improving the quality of care. The role of evidence-based, best practice guidelines in quality initiatives, safety improvement, and benefit decisions, and the impact of research on care decisions and ways to implement the changes based on evidence will be discussed. Models for communicating about quality and safety between reviewers, providers, and payers will be presented.

    • Understand ways to utilize care management guidelines to manage conflict in care management settings
  • Scenarios and Role Playing: Practice, Practice, Practice
    • Understand common preauthorization scenarios that are presented to medical directors
    • Understand common hospital care management scenarios that are presented to medical directors
    • Practice utilizing guidelines and conflict resolution skills in dealing with healthcare providers
