Regional Seminars: Advanced Training

Advanced Training is a two-day immersion seminar for experienced Milliman Care Guidelines® users who have had Basic Training and who need to manage more complex clinical situations. Advanced Training offers separate second-day tracks; one specifically for managers who are using the Care Guidelines and are seeking ways to expand their use, and another for experienced case managers who want to use the Care Guidelines to better manage complex patients.

Contact Hours – 11.5 (Day 1 – 6.5; Day 2 – 5.0)

Advanced Training is for you if:

  • You are able to search, navigate, and interpret the Care Guidelines effectively
  • You are a manager interested in maximizing your organization’s use of the Care Guidelines products you license
  • You are a case manager who wants to understand the advanced application skills necessary to effectively manage complex patients

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of day one of this training session, the learner will be able to:

  1. Describe how to utilize evidence-based guidelines to support best practice care management
  2. Discuss how to apply critical thinking skills to advanced care management activities
  3. Identify the steps critical to determining the appropriate inpatient levels of care
  4. List the resources needed to optimally manage complex cases
  5. Identify techniques for improving communication between payors and providers

At the conclusion of day two of this training session, the learner will be able to:

  1. Identify the goals for implementing interrater reliability assessments
  2. Describe advanced care management best practices for the prevention of unnecessary readmissions
  3. Apply clinical decision support tools to the transition of complex patients across the care continuum

Day One

The first day covers using the Care Guidelines as tools for communication and change. Topics will include:

  • Best-practices use of Care Guidelines evidence base with case, care, and utilization management processes
  • Using Care Guidelines for patient-centric decision making
  • The Care Guidelines as tools of communication between payors and providers
  • Observation Care vs. Inpatient Admission
  • Using Common Complications and Conditions for optimal inpatient case and utilization management
  • Using the Care Guidelines to enhance current practices

Day Two

During the second training day, topics will include:

  • The importance of interrater reliability
  • Variance tracking and its use in process improvement plans
  • Using the Care Guidelines as tools of best practice

Advanced Training Pre-requisites:

  • Actively licensed Care Guidelines user
  • Graduate from a Milliman Basic Training Regional Seminar, or
  • Trained by a Milliman Trainer, onsite or via the web, within the past two years
