Milliman Care Guidelines Customized for UK Market Launch
Seattle – October 31, 2006 – Milliman Care Guidelines has introduced a new version of its evidence-based clinical guidelines, customized to meet the needs of UK healthcare professionals.
“We are extremely pleased to be entering the UK market with tools that have improved clinical outcomes for millions of patients worldwide, ” said James Schibanoff, MD, Editor-in-Chief at Milliman Care Guidelines. “Delivery of quality medical care is a global issue, so customizing the Care Guidelines for the UK is a logical development for us.”
The Milliman Care Guidelines® are clinical decision support tools used for treating specific patient conditions with appropriate levels of care and optimal progression toward discharge or transition. They are written and reviewed by experienced physicians, nurses, and other clinicians to describe current best medical practice, recognizing that the unique circumstances of the patient should guide medical decisions. These clinical tools provide up-to-date, evidence-based knowledge, enabling more informed, consistent decisions and promoting the best possible care management, while maximizing efficiency in the use of healthcare resources.
The team that develops and reviews the complete Care Guidelines series has more than 50 years of clinical guideline development experience, relying on a rigorous, evidence-based methodology. During the annual guideline development process, Milliman editors review more than 100,000 medical articles worldwide, including 13,000 references deemed significant or relevant enough to be cited in the latest edition. The UK’s NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Evidence) Guidelines are included in the UK version. This evidence is integrated throughout the Care Guidelines’ succinct, easy-to-use Web format, using embedded links to provide users with simple access to annotated bibliographies, references and footnotes.
BUPA Health Insurance, which provides cover for more than three million people in the UK is the first UK healthcare company to be licensed to use the guidelines. Dr. Natalie-Jane Macdonald, BUPA Health Insurance’s Medical and Healthcare Purchasing Director said: “We will use the new guidelines to equip our clinical staff with information to ensure that decisions to fund treatment are clinically sound, consistently delivered and sufficiently flexible to recognize variation in individual patient circumstances. This is a further demonstration of our commitment to ensure that our insured members have access to the highest standards of medical care.”
