Milliman Care Guidelines® Now Available On Handheld PDAs

Decision Will Place Evidence-Based Clinical Guidelines in the Hands of Physicians

SEATTLE, WA - August 18, 2003 - Milliman Care Guidelines, a Division of Milliman, today announced that its evidence-based clinical guidelines, the Milliman Care Guidelines can be accessed on a handheld personal digital assistant (PDA).

With the introduction of a PDA version, Milliman Care Guidelines has taken the next step in its ongoing efforts to bring the latest, most appropriate clinical information directly to the point of care, where decision support is critical to ensuring the highest possible quality of care. “Many healthcare providers-especially physicians-are already using handhelds to access up-to-date patient data while making care decisions,” said James M. Schibanoff, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of Milliman Care Guidelines. “Now, they will have the Care Guidelines at their fingertips as well. Using the Care Guidelines at the point of care positively affects how healthcare providers care for their patients,” Schibanoff concluded.

The first Care Guidelines product offered on PDA is Inpatient and Surgical Care, providing 304 Medical, Surgical, and Pediatric Optimal Recovery Guidelines (ORG). Included are the most highly utilized sections of each ORG:

  • Related Guidelines
  • Indications for Admission
  • Alternatives to Admission
  • Optimal Recovery Course
  • Goal Length of Stay
  • Extended Stay
  • Footnotes
  • Codes

The content provided is supported by handheld devices using the Palm OS® or Pocket PC operating systems. The Care Guidelines utilize iSilo, which enhances navigation and can hold and display customer-specific documents and data, such as provider lists, facility lists, phone lists, policies, procedures and local guidelines.

“We’re making it easier to deliver the high quality care that patients deserve,” said John Agogliati, chief operating officer of Milliman Care Guidelines. “The handheld format is another step in providing convenient, point of care tools to our growing list of satisfied Milliman Care Guidelines users,” Agogliati added.

The Milliman Care Guidelines are a focused summary of the current best medical evidence, spanning the continuum of care. Designed to be used in conjunction with healthcare professionals’ clinical judgment, the Care Guidelines enable more informed and consistent clinical care decisions and promote the best possible care management.
