Epic's Referrals module, included with an EpicCare, Cadence, or Tapestry license, offers robust referrals functionality including auto-faxing, comprehensive security, duplicate checking, bed day tracking, provider steering, reporting options and more. The Referrals module helps customers identify referral requirements at the point of service based on the patient's benefit plan, visit type, specialty, provider type, and patient age/sex. Customer staff can enter complete information for each referral, such as the clinician or specialty to which the patient is being referred, procedures requested, diagnosis, number of visits authorized, authorizing staff, and expiration date. Once entered into the system, referrals can be assigned to patient appointments and the system automatically tracks the number of authorized, scheduled, and completed visits associated with each referral — the system automatically decrements visits and bed days as they are used.

Epic also offers a separately-licensed Utilization Management module that builds upon the embedded referrals functionality described above. The Utilization Management module provides a robust automatic status assignment rules engine, IBNR calculations, financial case management, claim code messages for AP claims, and In Basket functionality for your workflows.
